The World Health Organization says each year, 2 million people become infected with bacteria resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 die from it. Bacterial resistance occurs when someone doesn’t finish the full course of their antibiotic because they feel better and bacteria is left over. Experts say there are ways to prevent this from happening yourself. TTHSC Pharmacy Student Sara Labus says, “One of the ways that we can prevent infections in general is that if you take an antibiotic, take the full course, not just half of it and not save the rest of it for the next time you get an infection. Also if you don’t tolerate an antibiotic, don’t give it to another friend or family member for them to take because it was specifically prescribed for that individual.” Labus says to always listen to your doctor and not push them to prescribe you something. — KEYC News 12
